(1-3 pts.) In 3-4
complete
sentences describe the procedure you are about to do. Be as specific as
possible, but do not include the routine
or minor steps. The emphasis should be on what you are going to do
in lab. Address all of the major
portions of the lab.
Proofread your answer. Grammar counts!
An example of a
minimal answer would be "Electrochemical cells are
going to be made. Students will measure them
with an electric meter. We will put the results into a table." An
answer
like this would get 1 point total.
"We
will be making electrochemical cells by placing ionic solutions of Zn,
Fe, and
Cu into small wells containing electrodes of the same metal as ions of
the
solution and connecting the wells with a salt bridge made from paper
soaked in
a KCl solution. When the circuit is completed with a multi-meter, we
will
measure the sum of the potentials of the two cells connected. A Br2/Br-
cell with an inert carbon electrode will also be prepared and
compared to
the other cells. We will then measure the effect of
adding Na2S which will decrease
the concentration of the metal ions." This would
get full credit.
(1 pt.) What
are the safety considerations of which you need to be aware to complete
this
week's lab?
"We
will be using dilute aqueous solutions of ions having relatively low
toxicity. Skin provides a fairly effective barrier to adsorption. We
will need to acidify some solutions with 0.1M hydrochloric acid which
can affect the eyes. Normal laboratory precautions like wearing goggles
and washing hands with soap after laboratory is complete are sufficient
precautions. Avoidance of touching lips or eyes during lab will be
suffient to avoid ingestion."
