Project Leader

The principal investigator for these projects is Dr. Michael P. Zach. He currently holds a joint appointment with UWSP in Stevens Point, WI and Argonne National Laboratory outside of Chicago, but nearly all of the experiments are in Stevens Point, WI. In teaching of undergraduates Dr. Zach emphasizes the value of research and the student's ability to make scholarly contributions to society. As a result, the best and brightest of his students are eager to perform research. Awards. Publications.

Facilities for research at UWSP and within the University of Wisconsin System

The department maintains easy access to a wide variety of synthetic and analytical instrumentation. While the primary focus of the department is on teaching, the instrumentation is available for use any time it is not being used for teaching. In-stock supplies and chemicals are generally provided without charge for research. Our Department maintains good relations with other departments on campus so there is easy access to SEM and TEM which is provided free of charge. Our research group owns its own AFM for use in our experiments and for collaborations. As part of the collaboration with Argonne National Laboratory, electrochemical potentiostats, robotic chemical mixing system, three zone tube furnace, and other supplies have been made available.

Quality of life at UWSP/Stevens Point/Central Wisconsin Area

UW-Stevens Point is a great place to work and live. UW-Stevens Point is located in the heart of the state near the scenic Wisconsin River. UWSP is consistently named one of the top public mid-western universities, and this is one reason why Stevens Point is ranked within the top ten of the "Top 100 Places to Live". Cost of living in Central Wisconsin is affordable and traffic congestion is non-existent. Stevens Point offers a wide variety of festivals, cultural events and wonderful access to the north woods for outdoor activities. Stevens Point Public School system is also one of the state's best.

The UWSP Department of Chemistry

The Chemistry Department consists of fifteen tenure and tenure track professors that all work together nicely with a spirit of cooperation. The emphasis of the department is on teaching our undergraduate students. There is no Masters or Ph.D. program in chemistry. Our students are eager to learn. Here is our latest departmental newsletter.
